God Bless Airport Travel Agents
Today was the first day of my vacation. It wasn't exactly what I imagined the first day would be like. However, after I saw what travel agents at the airport have to go through on bad weather days, I decided it really wasn't too bad for a first day of vacation.
Here's the story....
I was supposed to leave for New York at 11am. Somewhere around 10, they cancelled the flight due to weather and limited flights being accepted into New York. They booked me on their next flight out at 2:40. Around 1:15 I was a little concerned when I didn't see an airplane at our gate. Somewhere after 2, flight cancelled. I went to the ticket counter and they very easily switched me to a flight with another airline, found my bag and gave me some meal vouchers for the inconvenience. I went to the other airline, checked in and then enjoyed some free time in the airport. I had a passing thought about the movie "The Terminal". I was glad to know my home wasn't that far away and I wouldn't be stuck in the airport forever.
Anyway back to the story. A few hours later I decided it was time to head to the gate. I headed to the security checkpoint for the second time and this time I was a lucky suspicious passenger. I was pulled aside and everything I had with me was thoroughly inspected. I'm SO suspicious looking! NOT! Actually, as I watched how thoroughly they checked my stuff, I felt pretty good. It was good to see them take the procedures very seriously and not just glance over my items. BTW-At the first checkpoint I walked past a guy checking out a block of cheese people had with them. Cheese??? I wouldn't have thought about hiding something in cheese or using it for something. Yeah for Security Checkpoint people being on their toes!
As the night went on, flights to the East coast were delayed and cancelled and my flight was supposedly still on time. The boarding time passed - no plane and no word of our flight. Then came the moment when I was ok with my day and felt sorry for the agents. One Philly flight had just been cancelled. As the line from those passengers began to dwindle, I stepped in line to check on my flight. Behind the counter stood four ticket agents, probably hoping for a moment to breathe. One stopped and told them all to hold on as she proceeded to make an announcement about another cancelled Philly flight. I've never seen so many people swarm to one place so quickly! Yes, at this moment I realized my day was pretty good.
To close the story, 20 minutes after my flight was to depart they announced the plane had not left NYC to come get us. Deciding it was too late and I didn't want to wait another 2.5 hours, I booked a flight for first thing in the morning and went home! I'm hoping and praying for better weather and a fresh start in the morning.
